With the premiere of Amazing Race Canada around the corner, residents of Wood Buffalo itching for their shot at the competition can get a taste of the action on July 7th during when the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) Programs hosts the Amazing Games.
The first annual Amazing Games competition is an opportunity for friends, family or co-workers to participate in challenges and trivia as group, no passports or travelling required. RMWB will be hosting the event free of charge.
Jacqueline Doleman, RMWB recreational programmer, explained event organizers tried to create a unique competition to appeal to a wide variety of residents. “We wanted to do something different than the other events that we ran for the city before. We know that everyone loves the Amazing Race so why not design something that is similar to that.”
“Basically for this event we are targeting youth aged 12 and up, although it is also a family friendly event. The teams pre-register with a maximum of eight team members, one of which must be over the age of 18. We will be having a maximum of 12 teams this year,” Doleman said.
Teams will compete in six events ranging from physical to mental challenges. Events were chosen to emphasize the range of skills and talents different people have. “There will be six stations, all with different activities that target different skills. The point is to have the team work together and try to do the best they can as a team at each station. There are activities such as water relays, blindfold relays, who can build the tallest tower, minute to win it, trivia and critical thinking.”
Teams will be given 20 minutes at each station and individual event will be awarded varying points based on difficulty levels. Prizes will be awarded to not only the top team, but also best team spirit.
The Amazing Games is one of the first of numerous community and family events RMWB Programs has planned for the summer. They will also be hosting Everybody’s Birthday Party on July 20th, and a classic car show and outdoor movies in the park in August.
The Amazing Games will be taking place at the Timberlea Athletic Field beginning at 1 pm Residents interested in participating in the Amazing Games can call RMWB Programs at 780-881-2336 to register, spaces are limited.
