Community advised of busy weekend September 13-15

The community is reminded of the many opportunities to participate in the events at MacDonald Island Park on the weekend of September 13-15, including the City Centre McMurray Half Marathon, Our Lady Peace and Sloan presented by Rock 97.9 FM, and Community Registration Day presented by Syncrude, and to plan for parking and transportation accordingly.

The City Centre McMurray Half Marathon weekend kicks off on September 13 when Our Lady Peace performs on the outdoor stage at MacDonald Island Park. Parking will be on a first-come, first -served basis, and it is suggested that concert attendees utilize public transit if possible. Wood Buffalo transit route No.99 runs every 15 minutes between the Jubilee Centre and MacDonald Island Park. Tickets to Our Lady Peace are available at the MacDonald Island Park box office (main floor Suncor Community Leisure Centre) or online at

On September 14 Community Registration Day presented by Syncrude runs from noon until 4:00 pm at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre. Formerly known as Get Up and Go Wood Buffalo, Community Registration Day is a trade-show format event enabling local social profit organizations and community groups to connect with members of the public. A complimentary community BBQ will be available.

On September 15 MacDonald Island Park will be closed to non-emergency vehicle traffic from 7:00 am until 12:30 pm to facilitate the City Centre McMurray Half Marathon. Event registrants will receive a parking pass enabling them to park at MacDonald Island. The weekend culminates with a free performance by Sloan, which is scheduled to begin at approximately 1:00 pm following the end of the various marathon races.

“We are looking forward to an incredibly exciting weekend at MacDonald Island Park in mid September,” said Jodie Mercier, General Manager of Sport and Recreation at MacDonald Island Park and City Centre McMurray Half Marathon Co-Chair. “We would like to thank the community in advance for their support and we encourage all residents to participate and enjoy all the events on that weekend as we welcome both the City Centre McMurray Half Marathon weekend, Community Registration Day, and two superb outdoor concerts from two Juno Award winners.”
