Gunshots Downtown Fort McMurray Lead to Arrests

On August 12, 2013 at approximately 1:00 a.m., the Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to several complaints of gunshots being heard in the downtown area. All witnesses reported hearing several gunshots from the Biggs Avenue area, and seeing 2 male individuals leaving the area on foot. Descriptions of the males were provided to RCMP and extensive patrols were conducted, leading to the arrest of the 2 described males. In addition to the arrests 2 firearms were seized by police in relation to this incident.

As a result of the investigation Abel Assefa, 27 of Fort McMurray and Bayan Idris, 23 of Fort McMurray have been charged with numerous weapons offences as well as resisting arrest. Both are scheduled to appear in Fort McMurray Provincial Court on August 26, 2013.
