Singing for local fundraisers

By Nathaniel Crossley

Hello and welcome to the Aurora Kid where I interview various kids around the region who are doing great things for others or for animals at the SPCA! In today’s edition, I interviewed 12-year-old Karlie Reid-Boomstrom who is a student at the Ecole McTavish Public Junior High. She partakes in many things at her school including break dance, basketball, volleyball, and Suessical Jr play.

Around town, Karlie has sung in fundraisers for our local SPCA, she has sung and helped raise money for the Timberlea Public School Breakfast Program, sang along side with Fort McMurray’s own “The Shantelle Davidson Band” for Run for the Cure, and for the Parsons Creek fire fundraiser. Karlie also volunteered with the Keyano Theatre for Hometown the Musical; she was the narrator and she sang “Rolling in the Deep” & “Folsom Prison Blues”.  She also volunteers with Girl Guides in our community.

Karlie believes kids like her and I should get more involved in the community because we are the future in this community and we need to get involved as soon as possible. It is important for us to utilize our talents and skills to help the community and have fun in the process.  She is inspired by her Dad (Mel) and her Mom (Deanna) who have volunteered at many local community events and with local community organizations. Her favourite memory from when she volunteered was when she got a chance to walk and pet the dogs when she sang at the SPCA fundraiser.

What Karlie has learned from volunteering her time is when she sings for fundraisers or festivals and make people smile and when she see them smiling it makes her feel really happy on the stage. She thinks it is important to volunteer and give back because you able to use you’re your talent to benefit our local community and local individuals.Karlie considers her little sister Kelsea her number one fan who supports Karlie and is often singing on stage with her.
