Fort McKay is now home to the newest health clinic in the region with the official grand opening of the Fort McKay Health Clinic. The clinic, which opened on November 19th, will help to keep Fort McKay residents off the highway just as winter is settling in throughout Wood Buffalo.
“The Fort McKay Health Clinic will provide an efficient, responsive solution to ensuring the health and employability of the many men and women who come to work in Canada’s oil sands. Through the professional services offered at our clinic, we can reduce down the time for the oil sands force,” said Scott Murray, vice president for health services, Calian Ltd.
“We are here for the grand opening and to make sure everyone in the Fort McKay community knows we are here,” he continued.
Murray said Calian Technologies Ltd., the organization responsible for creating the clinic, recognized the need for an occupational health services clinic in the Fort McKay region in order to meet the demands of the ever-growing oil sands industry.
“When we engaged with the oil and gas industry in the oil sands we heard that there was a need from pretty much everyone we talked to in the area,” Murray noted.
“As it stands today, the people in the Fort McKay area have to make their way down to Fort McMurray. Given that although it is not a long distance, it becomes an hour or two of travel each way plus whatever the wait times are in the clinic. From a cost perspective, it ends up being a full day endeavour and I think that represents a significant expense to the oil and gas company. It will be much more convenient to be able to access these services locally.”
The clinic will initially offer occupational health services, including employee physicals, work injury medical care, immunizations, drug and alcohol testing, mask fitting, vision tests and much more. Murray promised the expansion of services in the future should the opportunity present itself.
“To begin we are going to offering primarily occupational health services, with a plan to expand as needed. We don’t have any specifics yet, but we are exploring the opportunity to add more services locally. We are starting with the occupational services, so that is the highlight of the grand opening, but we are definitely interested in expanding as quick as the market will allow.”
The Fort McKay Health Clinic is located in the Fort McKay Industrial Park. The clinic will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
