Hockey night in Fort McMurray
Fort McMurray Oil Barons vs AJHL South Division teams Brooks Bandits Friday and Calgary Canucks Saturday. Games 8 p.m. Casman Centre. Bandits feature lead leading sniper Austin Plevy (committed to University of Massachusetts).
Keyano Huskies host Grant MacEwan University Griffins 7:35 Frank Lacroix Minor Hockey Arena and Saturday 1:35 p.m. Huskies top net minder is Fort McMurray’s own Logan Stebner. Free admission.
Have attended the annual Indian Beach Winterfest (Anzac Winterfest) countless times over the years and always had a great time. Kicks off tonight with a poker tournament and then Saturday the main festivities with pancake breakfast, fishing derby, King & Queen of the North, crib tournament, Northern 4 x 4 off-road racing, Tiny Tots Kids Activities and a fun SnoBowl 2015 featuring the Fort McMurray Wolves football club. Chinese New Year Celebration
Put on by the Fort McMurray Chinese-Canadian Cultural Society the Chinese New Year Celebration at the Sawridge Inn & Conference Centre 6 p.m. start. Tickets $60 adults and kids 10 and under $35. Info www.fmchinese.ca. Have attended this extravagant a few times over the years and always a happy occasion but this year will be missing FMCCCS President Dr. K.P. Wong, who passed away June 4, 2014 at the age of 68, was a Fort McMurray resident since 1979 having brought thousands of new lives into the world, including one of my daughters, in the caring role of obstetrics services.
Fort Chipewyan Fishing Derby
After a one year hiatus the 15th Fort Chipewyan Fishing Derby will be held at Long Lake (1 p.m. – 5 p.m.) With $23,000 in prize money and a grand prize of a boat/motor and trailer, there will no doubt be lots of lines and hooks in the water. Entry fee $50.
Head down to Peter Pond Mall for our local SPCA’s Kennels for Valentines! Fundraiser where you get a chance to sponsor an animal’s kennel for all of the necessities to keep it a happy critter.

Multicultural EXPO 2015
The Multicultural EXPO will be held from noon-5:00 p.m. at MacDonald Island on February 15th. Admission for adults is $5, children under age 12 are free. Odd-Lot Puppetry Company, featuring the talents of Brendan Boyd who was born and raised in Fort McMurray now residing in Edmonton, will be putting on three performances (10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m.) of “Fossils Alive” at the Oil Sands Discovery Centre. Free and fun.

Part of the Reel Performances: Toronto International Film Festival Film Circuit is presented by Fort McMurray Tourism and Keyano Theatre & Arts Centre and tonight (7 p.m.) at Keyano Recital Theatre is the film My Old Lady (2014) a British-French-American comedy-drama featuring the talents of Kevin Kline, Maggie Smith and Dame Kristin Ann Scott Thomas.
Tickets $13 at Keyano Box Office. Always enjoy these shows on the large screen in that I have never ever witnessed someone taking out their cell phone during the show or talking loudly.
Tom’s Talk: Fort McMurray Historical Society is a must for any local history buff as former resident Tom Morimoto, 96, will be at Heritage Park 7 p.m. to reminisce about his youth in Fort McMurray and service in World War II. His book Breaking Trail: From Canada’s Northern Frontier to the Oilfields of Dubai, will also be for sale and what a great way to get an autograph first-hand from a living legend.
