Get ready to gear up for the McMurray Sno-Drifters Association’s annual Poker Rally being held March 7. The rally heads out from the Sno-Drifter’s garage on Highway 69, 12 kilometres in from Highway 63 on the south side.
The club would like to see 300 riders participate though “300 plus would be better,” chuckles Donna Fetzko, the club’s executive assistant.
The name of the game is to pick up cards at each checkpoint then see how they stack up on return to the garage; there could be a pair, flush or maybe a full house.
The rally offers a short and long run choice for riders.
“On the long run, riders are going to loop the garage, take the short way around the Anzac loop, head up to Stone; there’s fire pits up there, grab a bite to eat and come back to the garage; be back before four.”
The short run is half the distance of the long run at 50 kilometres and is around the Anzac loop.
“You can visit our two fire pits there and H corner and pick up your cards. You have to be back at the garage by four as well.”
Fetzko has her fingers crossed old man winter sticks to the –4 and light snow forecast in the long-range weather for rally day. Last year’s event was a frigid affair with temperatures hovering in the –30s with wind chill, but that didn’t deter around 100 diehard sledders who still participated in the event.
“Learn the trails, get to meet people that obviously like doing the same you do and it’s great way to make new friends,” offered Fetzko on the attraction of the rally. In addition, it helps support the club which looks after the area’s award-winning trails. “If you don’t support it, they won’t be there.”
Fees for the rally are $10 for registration and $20 for hands though riders don’t have to play. Start time is 9 a.m.
ASA membership is needed for the rally. Riders 16 and under are free. A banquet held at the Quality Inn will finish off the day. Cocktails at 6:30 with dinner served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 for volunteers, $60 for singles, $100 for date night and $20 for ages eight to 16. All prizes are to be awarded at the banquet. And a 2015 Polaris Switchback Assault Snowmobile is up for grabs
