By DAWN BOOTH, Managing Editor of Connect Weekly
For over a decade, the Connect Weekly newspaper has been representing the Wood Buffalo region and its people by showcasing the vibrant place it is to live through community journalism. Due to the nature of its stories, it has gained respect and credibility with our residents. Additionally, it has been honoured with several awards of excellence, on behalf of the Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association.
I plan to keep the same voice of the paper, and give our residents a more in-depth information sharing experience.
Over the past couple of weeks, the Connect has been transitioning with the recent takeover by third-generation Alberta newspaper publisher, and president of Star Press, Roger Holmes of Wainwright, Alberta. Moving forward as the newly-hired managing editor, I plan to keep the same voice of the paper, and give our residents a more in-depth information sharing experience.
As a resident of the community since 2007, I have been able to watch Fort McMurray grow and become a more family-orientated city. I believe my past newspaper editing experiences, through other local publications, and my volunteer dedication has helped me develop an understanding to what our community is and what needs to be shared.
In this week’s edition, you’ll find the debut features of “Council Connects”, “Definitely Delicious” and “ASK L.K.”. These features were inspired with local residents – Verna Murphy, Terri Windover and L.K. Elliot (current Connect contributor) – in mind.
Murphy – a long-time resident, local writer, and recent Ward 1 candidate – stays consistently up-to-date with the happenings at city council. Her new feature: “Council Connects”, will keep you informed with local politics, including the agendas of our mayor and city councillors.
Windover is the owner and operator of Define Fit, a business of local fitness trainers. As a long-time resident, fitness instructor and nutrition expert, she will be providing you with her health-inspired food feature, “Definitely Delicious.” She will be creating weekly recipes and sharing healthy eating choices for our hardworking and fast-paced community.
Elliot is the writer for Connect’s recent: “Hot Mess Handbook” column, a spin-off feature from her first self-help novel: “Confessions of an Ex Hot Mess.” She will be reaching out to our readers with a “Dear Abby” inspired advice column. With her expertise as a life coach, she hopes to bring optimism to locals seeking advice through her “ASK L.K. – Because sometimes life can get messy” opinion column.
With our current team, and a few additions, we hope to continue delivering a publication worth-reading. And because we are a weekly publication, I plan to work alongside our incredible team of contributors to get behind the headlines (up-close, informative and personal), as we understand the demands of keeping our residents informed, enlightened and well connected.
