It’s been approximately a decade of Halloween family fun, courtesy of Junior Boo. Hosted by the Fort McMurray Boys & Girls Club, the event is slated for October 24 and 25 this year.

An off-shoot of the popular Chateau Boo, Fort McMurray’s longest-running haunted house for nearly 30 years, Junior Boo is designed for children without the scary elements. Last year, an estimated 600 children were in attendance.

Program Administration Manager, Joan Ofstie, notes Junior Boo “started out as a few carnival games with prizes and then with the popularity of the event it expanded to include bouncy castles, a photo booth, face painting, balloons, treat bags, and crafts.”

In addition, the line-up includes: “Halloween-themed activities like cookie decorating, craft decorating, bouncy castles, a photo booth, face painting, prizes, balloons, treat bags, and, giveaways,” shared Ofstie.

A fundraiser in support of the Tiny Toes Day Care and the United Way of Fort McMurray, which funds the agency, this year’s Junior Boo will feature new elements. There will be complimentary gift certificates from Boston Pizza, which will be given out on a first come, first serve basis. In addition, the group is looking for about a dozen volunteers for the day of the event to help with activities.

“We strongly encourage everyone to come to Junior Boo in costume. Each family will receive a complimentary Heroes calendar from the Club,” Ofstie said.

As for the inspiration behind Junior Boo, Chateau Boo – the ultimate haunted house – will be held from October 28 through to October 31.

“This event is a traditional part of the Fort McMurray Halloween experience. Wonderful volunteers from the community and staff of the Fort McMurray Boys and Girls Club come together to build, decorate, and become “Haunters” for this twisting haunted maze. Recent years have also seen a new addition to the event, our Carn-evil. Once visitors have gotten their fill of frights in the Haunted House, they can play a variety of Halloween carnival games for unique Chateau Boo prizes,” Ofstie said.

The Fort McMurray Boys & Girls Club is located at 20 Riedel Street. Call 780-791-7775 to volunteer and visit www.fmbgc.ca for more information.
