The doors to Fort McMurray’s first McDonald’s fast food restaurant opened on September 17, 1979 in Gregoire.
Fast forward 36 years to today, the original McDonald’s building has been replaced by a completely new restaurant that is 2,000 square foot larger and boasts some new features, according to Rod Halladay, director of operations.

Construction on the new building began this past June. Halladay explains it was time to bring the latest and greatest McDonald’s experience to the Fort McMurray community.

“It’s about continuing our brand transformation by responding to our guests’ needs, and building for today and the future to deliver an unmatched guest experience for guests of all ages. This new restaurant will feature some great new amenities that will add an improved ambiance and dining experience for our guests,” said Halladay.

“This new location will feature more seating in a brand new dining room with a fireplace and TVs, as well as, a new PlayPlace and dual-lane drive-thru. We will also feature new self-order kiosks for our guests, along with our McCafe beverage line-up, and bakery items.”

Reopening to the public at 5 a.m. on October 30, the restaurant will have self-serve kiosks as an option for guests who might prefer to take their time with their order (instead of waiting in line at the counter) and it will be open 24 hours.

And no worries for those who approach self-serve kiosks with a little trepidation. Help will be available to help master those menu options. McDonald’s has introduced a new staff role called the Guest Experience Leaders, who are there to assist guests in the dining room; whether greeting them at the door, checking in on their meals to ensure they have everything they need or assisting them with the kiosks.

Additional staff is being hired for the new location as the company is always looking to grow and hire more great people in its restaurants, points out Halladay.

“This new location has already created significant opportunities in our market for adding new staff and for career growth.”

As for the grand opening celebration, Ronald McDonald – himself – will be in the house for the official ribbon cutting on November 7.

“Our guests are always at the core of everything we do and we are very proud of this new restaurant,” Halladay continued. “This new restaurant reflects the exciting changes that are happening with our brand in Canada, and will provide a great experience for both our guests and our staff in Fort McMurray. Also, it’s great to know that with winter around the corner, our PlayPlace is open every day for our younger guests.”
