With the second open season for Shell Place’s SMS Equipment Stadium underway, the Regional Recreation Corporation (RRC) of Wood Buffalo announced the partnership with the Fort McMurray Monarchs Football Club on April 15.

The local Alberta Football League team will open its season at home in a game against the Calgary Wolfpack on May 28 and continue with three more scheduled games on June 4, June 18 and August 6.

“We are heading into the 2016 season with a strong roster, a committed coaching staff and a new home field at MacDonald Island Park,” Jesse Maddox, President of the Fort McMurray Monarchs Football Club stated in a release. “We anticipate a great summer of football as we continue to build on the last two seasons and we are really looking forward to playing in front of our fans at SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place.”

The Monarchs were first established in 2014 and have been since creating a stronger fan base in the region. With a motto: “For Team and City”, Monarchs’ officials and RRC representatives say they hope to capture the “enthusiasm and excitement of football in Fort McMurray” and harness the energy into the development of a competitive team.

“We are tremendously excited to welcome the Fort McMurray Monarchs as the anchor football tenant at SMS Equipment Stadium,” said Annette Antoniak, Chief Executive Officer of the RRC in the release. “This summer is shaping up to be an exciting season filled with football with the Monarchs and baseball with the Fort McMurray Giants, and we are delighted to join with these partners to present new opportunities for residents of the region to enjoy sport entertainment options in our community.”
