Recently, at the Alberta legislature I had the opportunity to join leaders from all parties in recognizing the heroes of the wildfire.

It’s now been over six months since the wildfire hit our city and I’ve learned a lot about who we are since then.
We are incredibly strong, compassionate and determined to help one another. We care deeply about making our city as great as it can be.

Sadly, it took six months for the province and other authorities to green light folks coming back to their homes, and to rebuild.

It’s been a period of frustration for many. But I am confident we will rebuild our town to be greater than it ever was before.

Below are the notes I delivered in the legislature thanking our front-line workers, firefighters and Albertans for their tireless contributions and sacrifices for our community:

I am so honored and so proud to be able to recognize some of the many thousands of Alberta heroes who stepped up to help when my home town was at threat of burning down.

While tens of thousands of Fort McMurray residents were lined up on Highway 63 and 881 as far as the eye could see, desperate to escape the flames licking at the roadside, first responders, fire fighters, police officers, lept into action. It was only through their heroic efforts that the people of my hometown were able to escape the flames.

And to the hundreds of Alberta heroes who won’t necessarily be recognized officially by government, thank you. These are the people who upon hearing news that Fort McMurray was evacuated, got into their pickup trucks, raced to the nearest gas station to fill up jerry cans of fuel, and flats of bottled water, and drove toward the threatening flames to help their common man and woman.

They didn’t do it for the accolades. They didn’t do it for money or fame. They did it because they are Albertans and it was the right thing to do.

To all of Alberta’s wildfire heroes, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
